Yup, that would be a cool feature. It is important to note though that (1) *not* a requirement for Preview and (2) not certain that this will be something we even get to for 1.0. That debate is for later, but I think it a mistake to hold it as a high priority some way to squeeze this in by tweaking the Cosmo architecture.
Admittedly, the changes I'd be likely to make will probably be annotations, which may eventually get modeled differently, but we haven't gotten near to implementing annotations yet, so as a first cut I'd like to edit items I get from read-only sources.
This doesn't sound like a great strategy to me, particularly if it adds difficult requirements (or a lot of extra work that gets thrown away) for Cosmo or conflicts with what Cosmo needs to do to implement its next set of features (like items in multiple Cosmo only collections where one collection is read only).
Anyway, I think we should be hesitant to add your read-only cut as a requirement in resolving this. Perhaps now is the time to be agile -- architect the solution for the annotations when we come to it, and architect now for needs we *know* we have to do to hit the basic plan.
