Right, at some level the question of disable versus disappear becomes an opinion question. There are obvious places where one or the other is clearly better, and some cases like this where it's debatable.
My point is that making this element go away was being proposed as the solution to a problem that Sheila seems to be having where disabled form elements are not appearing properly disabled.
Hiding the element may be a good idea on its own merit, but we need to fix the actual problem rather than glossing over it.
