Hi Pieter,
Thanks for bringing this to the list.
This is a bug that's been punted to Future: http://
bugzilla.osafoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3351
Unfortunately, it's a lot of work to fix.
However, ultimately I'm not sure this is the design we want to go
with. There are 2 competing mental models for the Faceted Sidebar,
one that treats the App areas merely as filters and a second which
treats each App area as its own destination.
I think there is merit to the latter one which has pretty drastic
consequences for how we want the user to experience switching App
areas: e.g.
+ Each App area persists its own
+ Each App area persists its own selected collection and selected
+ Each App Area persists its own view settings: What columns are
displayed, Column widths and Column Sort
I think there is merit to this second model when you take a closer
look at Calendaring versus Tasks versus Communications versus All App
area workflows.
To address the issue you're having below, we would have a separate
view selector widget that allows you to decide which views you want
to see within any given app area: Triage Table, Calendar, etc...
However, what I'm describing above is even more work than bug 3351!
So we decided to go with the 'App areas merely as filters' model a
while back...except we're still missing bug 3351.
So I agree though right now, the sidebar behavior we have today sets
users up to expect that item selection *should* persist across App
areas. I also agree that users will often start in the Dashboard view
with an event and want to see it in the context of the calendar. I
have run across this myself quite a few times.
I'm just not confident that we'll get to fixing it for Preview.
However if other dogfooders run into this workflow over and over
again, we will obviously need to revisit the bug.
Just out curiousity, what if we added a 'Take me to this event on the
calendar' widget to the Detail View for events? How much work would
that be?
Thx,
Pieter

I was hoping to find a way to go to an old-date calendar view and
thought that if I chose the All view and selected the item (say Jan
30, 2003 for example) then changed the view to Calendar the canvas
would retain the focus on the selected item and show that in the
calendar canvas.
But it doesn't, the focus goes to whatever week was previously
selected and no item is selected in the Detail View. Even if I had
previously selected an item in that calendar week, after I switch to
All and back to Calendar, the focus on that item is lost. I can go
back to the All view and the item previously selected in the All view
(on Jan 30, 2003) is still selected, and the DV shows that item.
It just seemed strange to me for the app to lose it's selected focus
on an item as I change views and was wondering if this is a design
"feature" or a bug.
