FWIW I think the Google calendar sharing UI is pretty ornery and I've
seen others trying to negotiate it get stuck as well.

why is that confusing? it seems natural to me. google calendar does it
that way - they give you a private url to use when you're accessing
your stuff and a public url to give everyone else.
