I agree though that we should generally strive to downgrade button- weight on the page.

But I think we need something with visual weight to both separate the list of collections from the mini-cal as well as anchor the 'New' text. Otherwise, the 'New' text will simply float in the sidebar.

'New' and 'Remove' are also important buttons.

An alternative way to lighten up the page would be to replace the Prev / Next buttons in the Dashboard Pagination Area and Main Calendar Nav Area to be flat arrow icons. Similarly, Show/Hide in the detail view could be up/down flat arrow icons as well. The pagination / calendar nav arrows are already in image_grid.png. It would save us much needed space as well.

As for Remove, I think if we're going to allow users to add collections, we need to also allow them to remove them. Otherwise, you can't get rid of collections you accidentally created.

-0 on buttons, I think they look too heavy. If other folks like that look, however, we can go for it. For a first pass I'm inclined to skip collection deletion and implement this as a text link.

Thoughts?

Here's a quick mock-up

Travis, can we re-use the button backgrounds we use elsewhere?

Ideally, the buttons would line up with the width of the mini-cal horizontal divider lines.

They vertical gap between the buttons and the Go-to-date widget should be the same as the vertical gap between the Go-to-date widget and the mini-cal navigation bar.

It would also be nice if we could get rid of the left and right borders for the mini-cal navigation buttons. Otherwise, the sidebar starts to feel overly compartmentalized.
