You have been subscribed to a public bug:
Using Ubuntu 7.10 (i386), all the latest updates. Installed from an
alternate CD. (This problem shouldn't happen using the LiveCD to
install).
To reproduce:
1. Choose "Command-Line System" at alternate CD boot menu.
2. Once the installation is complete, install GNOME (using a meta package or by
selecting individual packages) through apt-get or aptitude.
3. Start a GNOME session.
4. When GNOME starts, Metacity is not automatically started. Applications
opened are unmanaged, i.e., they have no title bar and cannot be resized.
Starting Metacity manually resolves this.
It appears that when GNOME is installed, it defaults to the Compiz
window manager. If Compiz is not present, it fails to load any window
manager.
Symlinking /usr/bin/compiz to /usr/bin/metacity solves this problem.
However, I believe that the real issue lies in a setting somewhere which
sets GNOME's default window manager to Compiz, regardless of whether it
is installed.
To resolve this issue, I suggest creating a fallback mechanism so that
if Compiz is not installed, Metacity (or another available window
manager) is started instead.
