Ok, now this is strange. I just tried it again, and now using pulseaudio works. I could play both "Experience Ubuntu.ogg" and "ubuntu-sax.ogg" at the same time (one in Totem, one in gnome-mplayer) without any problems. Using pavucontrol I could control both streams appropriately.
