I was running a previous version of Ubuntu and the update manager asked me if I
wanted to upgrade to 8.04. I did so and the upgrade proceeded fine. However, on
rebooting and logging in the screen remained blank, only a white rectangle
appearing top left. I was able to recover all data from the hard drive and
installed 8.04 from scratch, which worked fine. However, on installing the
security updates, the same thing happens (no desktop on login). This has now
happened twice, and I'm now installing Ubuntu for the third time today. As
there are 106 updates it's impossible for me to tell which one causes the bug.
I guess I'll just not run the security update, but that's kind of annoying.

BTW, I have a Dell laptop (XPS M1530).
