Please test your different card configs using aplay: 1) Change the default sound card using System> Preferences> Sound> Default sound card 2) Open a Terminal, then: aplay /usr/share/sounds/startup.wav This should play from the default sound card you just set. 3) Repeat steps 1 & 2 for a different sound card. If aplay plays correctly from the different default cards, then the applications (totem, vlc, mplayer, rhythmbox) are to blame. If aplay does /not/ play them correctly, please note that in a response in this bug report. We will need the contents of ~/.asoundrc.asoundconf each time after you set a (new) default sound card, the output from ``amixer'' (per-default card), and the contents of /proc/asound/cards (only once).
