This is a significant bug -- it affects the front door to the entire Ubuntu experience.
Why doesn't my account appear on the main login screen? Only one account is shown, along with a line for "Other". Ubuntu 11.04, fully updated. This seems to happen intermittently. It seems to be possibly linked somehow to hardware. I added more memory to the PC. On the next boot, this problem occurred. Shutting down and restarting doesn't help.
