Regarding my comment above: I realized that my problem happens also without any USB, just on the local disk, for instance when extracting a big tar file or deleting a directory that contains many files. Sorry if it is a different bug. Merlijn Sebrechts, do you observe the same problem on the local disk only? Also, I have found a workaround: Whenever manipulating a big file, throttle disk usage by running commands in conjunction with `pv -L 5m`, the operation will take more time but at least the system will not hang.
