Worth nothing, as a workaround I issued `dpkg -r --force-depends gnome- shell-extension-desktop-icons' followed by 'apt-mark hold gnome-shell- extension-desktop-icons` to be able to get rid of the extension. Once done, logging out and back in will give you a clean desktop with no icons.
