Next time the problem is happening please run:
journalctl -b0 > journal.txt
free -h > memfree.txt
and attach the resulting text files here.
Known causes of lagginess that come to mind are:
* Xorg can't deal with switching between multiple keyboard-like
devices. But it looks like you're not using Xorg.
* Running out of memory and the resulting swapping can slow things
down.
* High CPU usage.
