It sounds like there is no "hotplug" event when the HDMI cable is
disconnected so it's staying on the TV-only setting.

It's very likely your HDMI port is wired to the Nvidia GPU, whereas the
laptop screen is wired to the Intel GPU. Since we expect you will get
better performance with all monitors connected to the same GPU, using a
USB-C to HDMI cable might improve performance while also working around
this bug.

Please also confirm if the bug only occurs in Wayland sessions or if it
occurs in Xorg too.
