Public bug reported:
Summary:
Wayland session drops to GDM. GNOME Shell ([email protected]) is
killed with status=9/KILL at the same time the kernel logs an AMDGPU DRM
display timeout. All Wayland clients lose the compositor connection.
Details:
- Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (GNOME Shell 46, Wayland)
- Multi-monitor AMD GPU system
- Not an OOM event (no OOM killer messages)
- No gnome-shell coredump; shell is SIGKILL’d by systemd
- Kernel logs show:
amdgpu [drm] REG_WAIT timeout (program_formatter_reset_dig_resync_fifo)
at the same timestamp the session terminates.
Observed behavior:
The entire GNOME Wayland session exits back to GDM. All applications report
“Lost connection to Wayland compositor / Broken pipe”.
Possible trigger:
This appears to happen more than once while dragging a Chrome tab out of a
browser window to create a new window (often when maximized or tiled across
large/multiple monitors). This may be a stress trigger rather than the root
cause.
Request:
Please advise whether this should be handled as a Mutter / gnome-shell Wayland
issue or forwarded to AMDGPU (kernel / Mesa). I can test without extensions or
provide additional logs if needed.
