** Description changed:
[ Impact ]
On upgrade to 26.04, the default Ubuntu Desktop gnome-shell extensions
are not installed if the `ubuntu-desktop-minimal` metapackage was not
present on the upgrading system.
This manifests with missing desktop icons, enhanced tiling, and app-
indicators, as well as with an empty Settings > Ubuntu Desktop page.
The proposed solution is to add a dependency on the `gnome-shell-
- ubuntnu-extensions` from the `ubuntu-session` package, which provides
- the means to log-in to the Ubuntu desktop. Previously instead, there was
- only a dependency on the extensions package from the ubuntu-
- desktop{,-minimal} metapackages.
+ ubuntnu-extensions` from the `ubuntu-session` package, which is the
+ binary package providing the means to log-in to the Ubuntu desktop
+ session. Previously instead, there was only a dependency on the
+ extensions package from the ubuntu-desktop{,-minimal} metapackages.
[ Test Plan ]
1. Set up a 24.04 or 25.10 Ubuntu Desktop install
2. Remove the ubuntu-desktop and ubuntu-desktop-minimal metapackages
-> this should mark all direct dependants as manually installed, rather
than
removing them as unused
3. Upgrade to 26.04
4. Verify that desktop icons, enhanced tiling and app-indicators are available
5. Verify that Settings > Ubuntu Desktop is available
[ Where problems could occur ]
Removing gnome-shell-ubuntu-extensions will now require removing the
ubuntu-session package as well. This is intended: if the user wants to
use gnome without the ubuntu extensions they can use the `gnome-session`
package instead (or disable the extensions instead of uninstalling them)
