I was able to get this freeze to happen again. Since my local session
was hung, I logged in to the affected machine via SSH.
Here's the relevant entries from /var/log/syslog:

> the next time it happens please force the shell to dump core: sudo
killall -USR1 gnome-shell
I ran this command from within my SSH session, and it cleared the screen
and returned my local console to the GNOME login prompt.
> Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run: ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
> Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.
There is no crash file that is obviously related to this particular
hang. The most recent file is several days old, and unrelated to gnome-
shell, xwayland, or the game.
> If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
This brings me to a page that simply says "No errors have been reported
from this system".
