Checked /var/crash: no gnome-shell or Xorg crashes; GDM simply never spawned the user session (session-2.scope journal is empty and no user Xorg.1.log is written).
Bug 2089709 does look related: right at the failed handover, the greeter Xorg logs repeated "(EE) modeset(0): Failed to set CTM property: -13" (EACCES), matching the DRM-mastership race described there. The difference here is that the user session never starts at all; the greeter X server instead enters a regeneration loop (~1/s, re-probing EDID and inputs) until power-off. This is X11 on hybrid Intel/NVIDIA (580.173.02), no virtualization.
