Hello, I don’t know if the cause is the same but I have similar symptom as the first description.
Context: after upgrade from LTS 24 to 26, ubuntu standard with gnome. I’m not an adminsys but I use the cli daily and can follow instructions. Symptom: after reboot post upgrade, it loads a broken shell with the clock on top center, clickable and showing the calendar, with mouse working. And that’s all! No freeze, no black screen. But no login form, no greeter. I join a journal log of the boot filtered by gdm|shell|greeter. You can see there is a JS error on the login display. And error on icon/pixbuf. I’m not able to say myself, if it loads the right gdm params but there is error or crash to display the login OR if it loads the wrong shell as described in the first post. Obviously don’t hesitate to say if it would be better for me to open a new issue.
