No, they have to go and manually parse the private file epiphany uses internally, reparsing it from scratch every time it changes. It's as far from "quite well" as you can get. With or without tracker (the good thing about tracker is that it provides a complete solution, which you may like or dislike) what needs to happen is a sane way of exporting that data to all applications in the system.
