Ah, I see... and Firefox downloads files to /tmp before moving them  
to your chosen download location (if you clicked "save link as") or,  
in this case, opening them.

I don't know if there's any way to configure Firefox's temporary  
download location without recompiling.  I suspect not, but hopefully  
someone from the browser team will read this and tell us...
