Yes, MPlayer is very desirable, but it must be looked at from two different
perspectives.

I use 2008.05 both at home, at work, and on the road. MPlayer/media is
important for home users, but I have very little need for it at work. The key
issue then boils down to whether we intend OpenSolaris to be for "regular
users" or for business users. I tend to favor the latter, though I probably
would still vote for MPlayer.

On the road (i.e., using OpenSolaris on notebooks), then it is a very different
story. Power saving, or more specifically suspend-to-ram (STR) or hibernation,
becomes a critical factor. I have a ThinkPad R61i with 2GB RAM etc. Until
last Friday, neither Solaris nor Linux does a competent STR job. However, SuSE
11.0 GM, which came out last Friday, seems to do even a better job regarding
STR than Vista. As a result, I am switching to SuSE 11.0 "at least" for this
notebook. Many on-the-road users will very likely make the same choice. If
SuSE can do STR on c2d-based ThinkPads, I am pretty sure Solaris can do it,
too. This is I believe a question of priority, but it is something that
deserves to be carefully considered.
