I regularly use GDM for the following reasons:
* Slick themable login screen. Gives professional look and feel
and is a good marketing tool when I am talking about Solaris
to people outside SUN.
* Has an option to shutdown from the login screen. May be bad
for security but good for desktop use.
* Tells me clearly if I accidentally hit CapsLock while typing.
* Provides a failsafe login option to bypass GNOME/KDE or any
other desktop. I can then start a minimal window manager and
comfortably debug GNOME issues without having to use the
single text console.
