  I would have guessed a memory leak, but you say it persists after
  reboot.  I suppose you could have filled up a filesystem as well, or
  have a failing disk...

  Try booting to single-user mode, and having a look around.  (When the
  grub menu comes up, select the menu item, but press 'e', and add "-s"
  to the end of the kernel line... unless you've customized something.)
