Note: WAV files can include various encodings; audioplay doesn't support them
all.

According to http://www.mp3licensing.com/licensees/index.asp, Sun has an MP3
license (although I have no idea of just what it covers).

Even if audioplay could be modified to support MP3 WAV files, it may well be
impossible for the MP3 decoder to be open source. (OTOH
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP3 says the patent holder aren't enforcing against
free decoders, and I think I see an mp3 input plugin for the SFW xmms.

So could audioplay be enhanced for MP3 (and any other common non-proprietary
WAV encodings not already supported) or not?

Some sort of proper plugin (with a small GUI) would be nice, too. Can something
already present or already open source be used like that (without crud like
Xswallow
or plugger)?
