Your argument has some merit.  I once tried to answer the question
"what Gnome-related processes need to run on my (S10) system if I just
want to run the desktop, some xterms, emacs, and Firefox?"

After an extended Google session I gave up.  So if there was something
like a "performance cookbook" for Gnome under Solaris/OpenSolaris
it might ease some of the pain.
