BeleniX 0.8 Alpha release is coming up shortly based on a simple
network-based
installer that will build a BeleniX boot environment. LiveCD will
take some more time.
The 0.8 Alpha release will feature an integrated KDE 4.2.4
environment with bugfixes
and a few missing pieces filled up.
In addition 0.8 will be providing a FOX (Fully Open X) build that
provides libxcb
with XCB support in libX11. Thus KDE4 components like Phonon are
built with XCB
   support.
There will be additional stuff provided like WebKit-Qt, Google
Gadgets - Qt, XULRunner
   etc.
I have been testing Konqueror + Webkit and it works well for normal
browsing including
   Flash support.
In addition 0.8 will also provide a complete Gnome 2.26 environment
based on the JDS
repository with modifications. The KDE4 build of 0.8 avoids
duplication of packages
already in the JDS repo, but modifications to those are needed to
support KDE4 and
   some BeleniX specifics.

The entire shebang with the exception of several JDS packages are
built using Gcc 4.4.
Among other stuff 0.8 will also feature Python 2.6 built usig Gcc
4.4 + Profile Driven
Optimization. More details will be there when I announce the alpha release.

It was an amazing amount of work to build, debug and integrate KDE
4.2.4. About
10x the work that was needed for KDE 3.5.x and still there are gaps
like Kpackage
   and some modules in Kinfocenter.

I have been trying out Firefox 3.5.2 build using Gcc 4.4 as well
but the optimized
build cores while the debug build works but is unable to load the
Java plugin since
BeleniX uses the standard SUN-supplied DLJ JDK that is built using
SUN Studio.
So we have mangling/vtable issues. We will have to look at OpenJDK
+ Gcc later.
For now a SUN Studio built FF3 is the best option.

Moinak.
