A gnome-terminal.
Application dialogue windows open and stay as a blank, grey window for several
minutes the first time they appear. At least in Solaris Studio, the first
dialogue window to open will lock the display until it start to respond.
Second info-gathering question: are you using metacity or compiz as your window
manager? If the latter, does switching back to metacity make any difference?
I haven't tried enabling compiz on this system. Another data point is it
it appears to be Java applications that suffer from the blank dialogue
window problem.
