Per Robert's comment #1, clicking the "Show N Technical Items" link at
the bottom left of the Software Center window will display the Tex Live
packages near the very top of the list (within the first 6-8 items, and
so are easily visible). Therefore, I'll close this bug as I think this
is a reasonable user experience.
Many thanks!

Title:
Searching for tex or latex doesn't show TeX Live
Status in “software-center” package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
Binary package hint: software-center
Many LaTeX users do not know that they need the install the TeX Live
distribution in order to use LaTeX. Searching for "latex" or "tex" in
the software center (of Ubuntu 10.10) only lists text editors and
(La)TeX IDEs. To install the TeX itself one has to search for "tex
live".
