NM depends on netlink which depends on the hardware driver properly reporting carrier presence -- this would be a driver bug for the particular ethernet device on that board.

In addition, network-manager incorrectly displays a "connecting wifi" icon while it tries to connect to the wired connection. This bug does not affect actual connectivity and is purely cosmetic.
