Wired network shows disconnected but networking works.

Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Ubuntu 12.04 - When I boot up I get a "connection established" message
for my wired network. I can browse the web, etc and everything works
fine. The problem is that when I clieck on the network manager it
shows "Wired Network disconnected" and will not let me connect to my
VPN until I disable networking then re-enable it.
