Opening new tab causes history to dissapear

Bug description:
Using FF10.0.2. Upon opening firefox, all my previous tabs open and i
have access to history and back buttons (curiously i have no, and
cannot add a forward button to the toolbar) even from previous
sessions. I can browse through all open tabs and navigate normally
with back buttons and rightclick > back. I also have access to the
history from menus.
As soon as I open a new tab however, the back button on all other tabs
including the one that i just opened is greyed out as is the back in
the context menu and also the history appears to be blank. If I close
Firefox and re-open however, all is well again until a new tab is
opened.
