Thank you for your bug report, that's a workaround which was used to
avoid a bug which was letting users with an empty background as only
session around beta2, that got resolved a bit later, sorry that your
config got resetted but such issues can happen in an unstable cycle

Title:
  Compiz settings lost

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
Today, I found that my compiz settings were lost and appear to be reset to
defaults. This included
  - Icon size: 32
  - Mouse button bindings: I use the left and right "buttons" on my mouse wheel
to switch workspaces
  - Workspace configuration: My work spaces are laid out horizontally, so I
only need left + right movement to switch workspaces
  - Key bindings: I use Win + arrow for switching workspaces, Win + alt for
moving apps
