Appears to have been a problem with conflicting keyboard shortcuts. I
had been using Application Switcher in place of the default Unity
switcher.  Somehow in the upgrade the keyboard shortcuts got reset, so
both were trying to respond to my Alt+Tab.

Disabling Application Switcher prevents the problem.

Bug description:
  A few minutes after starting to play music with rhythmbox, everything
  starts to go very slowly:

  - display does not update and refresh 
  - mouse pointer freezes for ~30 seconds at a time
  - unable to switch applications or open others (so can't open terminal to see 
what is happening) or this is extremely delayed
  - music continues to play, but has a skipping effect
  -  once I manage to get the mouse pointer to the right position and close 
rhythmbox, system returns to normal
