Thanks for the answer, though I am really sorry to hear that this decision has been made.
The fact is, that LibreOffice is by far the least integrated of all default Ubuntu applications, and the only one with a splash screen. Other default applications, such as Firefox, Thunderbird and Ubuntu Software Center, can also take a long time to start - but they are not using splash screen. If a startup process is so important that it has to stay visible (although I believe it's only an annoyance for the end user, a painful reminder of the slowness of the user's computer and/or software), a solution more in line with Ubuntu HIG would be to either show a notification (e.g. "LibreOffice Writer is loading") or to immediately add the LO icon to Unity's sidebar (if not already present) and then show a progress bar on it (similar to Firefox download process). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to libreoffice in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/711035 Title: Splash screens for applications inconsistent with Ubuntu Desktop Status in One Hundred Paper Cuts: Invalid Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu: Won't Fix Bug description: When launched, LibreOffice (default application) and GIMP (featured application) are showing a splash screen which is very inconsistent with every other Ubuntu application. Simplest solution is to just remove splash screens (which are basically impossible to remove for the end user). (This is my first bug report, so I apologize if I didn't file it correctly.)
