This has affected me on every Ubuntu since 9.04 at least. Working with
remote files through sftp was a PITA. It was one of the reasons for me
to end up using Kate. Kate doesn't use GVFS, so it won't hang, just
reconnects when needed.

I'm returning slowly to Gedit as it evolves, so maybe I will report more
data about this soon.

Title:
Operations hangs on ftp and sftp (ssh) because of server silently
dropping connection due to no prior activity

Status in “gvfs” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gvfs

Many servers will drop the connection if no activity happens on the wire.
When this happens any operation (like copying a file in nautilus, or saving in
gedit), just hangs for ever, locking up the program. This could be fixed by
first testing if the connection still exists and if it doesn't try to
reconnecting and if that fails, send a fail to the application.
It could also be fixed by periodically sending out NOOP to keep the
connection alive.
