This has affected me on every Ubuntu since 9.04 at least. Working with remote files through sftp was a PITA. It was one of the reasons for me to end up using Kate. Kate doesn't use GVFS, so it won't hang, just reconnects when needed.

When this happens any operation (like copying a file in nautilus, or saving in gedit), just hangs for ever, locking up the program. This could be fixed by first testing if the connection still exists and if it doesn't try to reconnecting and if that fails, send a fail to the application. It could also be fixed by periodically sending out NOOP to keep the connection alive.
