I tried several times on Ubuntu 12.04, with Unity2D 5.12, Gedit 3.4.1 and gvfs 1.12.1, and it seems fixed! That's good news.

When this happens any operation (like copying a file in nautilus, or saving in gedit), just hangs for ever, locking up the program. This could be fixed by first testing if the connection still exists and if it doesn't try to reconnecting and if that fails, send a fail to the application. It could also be fixed by periodically sending out NOOP to keep the connection alive.
