The ALSA Pre-Amp workaround I mentioned prior isn't really that good. 1. It requires nuking pulseaudio altogether 2. the amplification really distorts the sound.
The only decent workaround is to install pavucontrol and control volumes for applications above 100% (increases dB gain) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to alsa-driver in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1001678 Title: [Vostro V131, Conexant CX20590, Speaker, Internal] volume slider problem Status in “alsa-driver” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: even at 100%, volume is toooo low.going above 100% it starts to get audible in 12.04 it was already lower than on 11.10, but not this much ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.10 Package: alsa-base 1.0.25+dfsg-0ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.4.0-2.6-generic 3.4.0-rc7 Uname: Linux 3.4.0-2-generic x86_64 AlsaVersion: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.25.
