The ALSA Pre-Amp workaround I mentioned prior isn't really that good. 1.
It requires nuking pulseaudio altogether 2. the amplification really
distorts the sound.

The only decent workaround is to install pavucontrol and control volumes
for applications above 100% (increases dB gain)
