the problem is the icons in the Humanity theme, namely the files
"audio-volume-<level>.svg" and corresponding .png (where <level> is either
high,low,medium or mute), which are found in /usr/share/icons/Humanity/status/
subdirectories 16,22,24 and some others, don't remember precisely. Apparently
Unity doesn't use those icons, but gnome does and that's the low resolution
images you see.
One possible and not very nice fix is to delete those files: then gnome default
icons will be used. But at the first update of the theme package, the problem
will be back (and this solution still available).

Bug description:
I am using ubuntu 11.10 and gnome-shell. When I am changing volume
with buttons on keyboard, there are notification window with very low
resolution icon.
