It looks like the second option did the trick:
Turning off PulseAudio timer scheduling
If your problem is specific to PulseAudio, you could as a last resort,
try to turn off PulseAudio's timer scheduling.
Note that this might consume slightly more power.
To change this, edit the file /etc/pulse/default.pa and change the
line that says:
load-module module-udev-detect
to
load-module module-udev-detect tsched=0
But why wasn't that needed on kernel versions <=3.4?

crippled sound after installing kernel 3.6

Bug description:
I tested kernel 3.6.0-030600rc6-generic on my Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit and
since then sound is crippled (sample attached). Even the login sound
is crippled (so this is not limited to the sample done with Skype).
In kernel 3.4 everything still fine.
