Ran apport-collect and got in the terminal window:

No packages found matching alsa-driver.


The "Apport/Collecting Information" has been running for about 15 minutes.  If 
it doesn't stop, and then try your manual method.

  Sound works under Win7, so hardware is good.  When I run ubuntu-bug,
  is says that pulseaudio has crashed.  This is ubuntu 64-bit, v12.04,
  clean install, not an upgrade.
