Can you please post information on what version of nautilus you are
using as I can not reproduce this problem. The icon always shows for me.
Also where is the custom icon you are using located? Is it on a
different drive (mount) to ubuntu? Is it in a different users home
folder from the user you are logged in as?

Bug description:
  When for example we set a custom icon for a folder and then add this
  folder to the bookmarks, the folder in the left panel will have the
  default "folder" icon, if we click on it the icon is updated but if we
  kill nautilus and reopen it, the icon will be gone again.
