Installed xubuntu 12.10, applied fix listed at  
http://osdir.com/ml/ubuntu-bugs/2012-10/msg24714.html (didn't work at all 
before)
then turned off PulseAudio timer scheduling.  Pulse audio crashes after a 
minute or so.
