I cannot think of any rational explanation. Does the problem still
occur? Is it limited to compiz/unity?

Title:
  Massive white bar across screen

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-intel” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I'm not sure if this is an xorg issue or possibly a Chromium issue,
but I'm playing it safe with xorg for now.

In the last couple weeks -- and I'm not sure after which update -- a
massive white horizontal bar has been appearing across my screen at
random moments, and it doesn't go away. The desktop still functions
and I can use the mouse, but this massive white bar covers most
  everything and I can't see what's happening.

This seems to be a software issue, not a hardware issue. The only
thing I can be sure of is that it happens when trying to complete some
kind of function, and I think it happens when logging in to web sites,
and possibly when using Chromium. I know it happened when I had a
student logging in to his university Collab page in Chromium, and it
happened to me today when logging in to LastPass in Chromium. However,
it's happened to me at least 5 or 6 times in the past two weeks.

The obvious thing would be to try a different Chromium, but I'm
curious if this has happened to anyone else, and it still seems to be
an xorg issue, even if triggered when using Chromium.

  I've attached a screenshot.
