Title:
DPI settings do not influence scan result on Epson Stylus Photo PX710W
Status in “simple-scan” package in Ubuntu:
Expired
Bug description:
Scanner ID: Bus 001 Device 004: ID 04b8:0852 Seiko Epson Corp.
"I have a good faith belief that this is a bug in Simple Scan and not
in sane-backends because I actually tried with xsane and it worked
there."
Essence of problem: I do not see difference in files saved after
change of setting between 300dpi vs. 600dpi for images or 150dpi vs
300/600dpi for text
Here I make my point based on the file sizes.
The following files were generated by Simple Scan in various Text/Image
300/600 dpi settings.
~/tmp/ocr_try$ ls -lh ss*
-rw-rw-r-- 1 user1 user1 2,2M feb 9 19:43 ss_image_300dpi.png
-rw-rw-r-- 1 user1 user1 2,2M feb 9 19:53 ss_image_600dpi.png
-rw-rw-r-- 1 user1 user1 77K feb 9 19:44 ss_text_300dpi.png
-rw-rw-r-- 1 user1 user1 79K feb 9 19:52 ss_text_600dpi.png
For comparison, files obtained by scan with various settings in "Image Scan!
for Linux" from Epson:
~/tmp/ocr_try$ ls -lh is*
-rw-rw-r-- 1 user1 user1 96K feb 9 20:31 is_150dpi_text_bw.png
-rw-rw-r-- 1 user1 user1 702K feb 9 20:26 is_300dpi_image_bw.png
-rw-rw-r-- 1 user1 user1 2,2M feb 9 20:18 is_300dpi_image.png
-rw-rw-r-- 1 user1 user1 261K feb 9 20:24 is_300dpi_text_bw.png
-rw-rw-r-- 1 user1 user1 789K feb 9 20:21 is_300dpi_text.png
-rw-rw-r-- 1 user1 user1 2,6M feb 9 20:25 is_600dpi_image_bw.png
-rw-rw-r-- 1 user1 user1 7,9M feb 9 20:20 is_600dpi_image.png
-rw-rw-r-- 1 user1 user1 851K feb 9 20:25 is_600dpi_text_bw.png
-rw-rw-r-- 1 user1 user1 2,5M feb 9 20:20 is_600dpi_text.png
Note that "Simple Scan" Text file size for 300/600dpi settings roughly
corresponds to "Image Scan" 150dpi for B&W Document (150dpi is default for Text
in "Simple Scan"), while "Simple Scan" 300/600dpi Image corresponds to "Image
Scan" 300dpi Color Photo settings.
Another couple of scans acquired with XSane:
~/tmp/ocr_try$ ls -lh xsane*
-rw-r----- 1 user1 user1 772K feb 9 21:18 xsane_300dpi_gray.png
-rw-r----- 1 user1 user1 2,9M feb 9 21:17 xsane_600dpi_gray.png
Note that sizes of XSane generated files roughly match to "Image Scan"
300dpi B&W Image and 600dpi B&W image.
I think that it is very important to have ability to make scans with 300dpi
B&W settings since those are recommended settings for better OCR performance.
