I have an ASUS UL30A laptop with Intel® GMA X4500MHD graphics card and I
have had this problem ever since I started using Ubuntu (10.04). Now I
run 12.04 and the problem persists. I have tried everything but nothing
works except going to "Brightness and Lock", decreasing "Brightness" to
the minimum and then increasing it again. I have to do this everytime I
log in or after unlocking the screen.

By the way I don't have "Dim screen to save power" checked, "Turn screen
off when inactive for" is set to "Never" and "Lock" is "OFF" but never
the less the screen dims and locks. So neither of the options on the
"Brightness and Lock" works for me.

Title:
Screen is very dim after turning on Laptop

Status in “nvidia-graphics-drivers” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Installed Ubuntu 11.10 64bit on my Fujitsu Esprimo Mobile V6555 laptop.
Every time when turned on, the screen is extremely dim. Brightness up
combination (Fn+F9) doesn't work. Need to go to System settings -> Screen and
rise brightness from there. I rise it there to the max and the brightness is
still not maximal. Then I need to press Fn+F9 once to rise it to the brightest.
I need to do it every time my laptop turns on.
This did NOT happen in Ubuntu 10.10 and 11.04 that were installed on this
same laptop earlier.
