iPods don't expose themselves as a raw block device, so even if they use
hfsplus internally ( which I don't think they do ), it isn't needed.

Title:
Rhythmbox doesn't warn if hfsplus isn't installed
Status in “rhythmbox” package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
Binary package hint: rhythmbox
I read in the ubuntuusers.de-wiki that you could only write on the
iPod-filesystem if hfsplus is installed. Rhythmbox doesn't warn you at
all if you try to write on your iPod without hfsplus installed.
