my latex invoices are suddenly letter, even when using g-brief

Bug description:
I'm used to print invoices using the g-brief latex template. Last
month it was still working (1st March), but this month I had real
difficulties to even set the paper size correctly. After some googling
I found I have to call paperconfig, which worked in telling pdflatex
to generate A4 output, but it still fails to set the document margins
right. Because of the wrong margins the invoice can't be folded
correctly anymore -- what a mess.
I'm on Ubuntu 13.04!
