Got the same error this morning.
Note that it happens after an apt-get dist-upgrade with an update of mesa +
reboot
Same error this morning when I plugged an external monitor:

Title:
Cannot start any Mir server ... std::exception::what: Failed to set
DRM crtc
Status in Mir:
Incomplete
Status in “mesa” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I can't seem to start any mir server any more. It always fails with:
sudo bin/mir_demo_server
ERROR:

Dynamic exception type:

Running it locally, or as root does not help. And there's no other Mir server
running. Only plain X:
/usr/bin/X :0 -core -auth /var/run/lightdm/root/:0 -nolisten tcp vt8
-novtswitch
