Got it!
Not an ubuntu or cups bug in the end, at least so it appears.
It is the wifi access point / adsl unit.
With the zyxel prestige 600 it does not work
With any other wifi access point / adsl it works.
Now... why should an access point interfere with lan to lan
communication on the 9100 port?

Title:
printing hangs reporting 'processing'
Status in “hplip” package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
On 2 different machines:
1) Kubuntu raring 64 bit
2) Kubuntu saucy 32 bit
I do not seem to be able to print to an HP Officejet 4500 wireless
connected via wifi using CUPS and HPLIP
Specifically
1) The hp-toolbox finds the printer correctly. Furthermore I can scan from
the machine, hence the wifi connection works
2) WIFI printing works from an Apple laptop, so the printer itself works
3) When I try to print anything (including the testpage), cups hangs
reporting 'processing status' for the 1st page, as if it was unable to deliver
it to the printer
4) While in this state I see the following processes stopped on my machine
lp 3475 0.0 0.0 54380 2012 ? S 11:33 0:00

5) While in this condition, there is nothing indicating attempts at
comunicating to the printer in netstat
7) Trying to add debug to the cupsd.conf does not show any error.
Simply, at some point the debug output stops (right after updating the
subscriptions in etc)
I would say that this is a gregression (due to some package update
maybe?), since I was able to print from the raring machine till at
most a couple of months ago.
